These days, most people are all about gadgets. We went from smart phones to smart everything in pretty short order, and we just love when our electronics make our lives easier and our day-to-day tasks faster. As Calgary HVAC professionals, we keep our eyes on all the technological advances designed to keep our customers’ homes more comfortable and their wallets fatter. Chief among those gadgets is the programmable thermostat.

What Is A Programmable Thermostat?

With a manual thermostat, you have to physically go to the thermostat to adjust the temperature any time you want to heat or cool your home differently. A programmable thermostat has at least four, pre-programmed schedules for heating and cooling your home. It automatically adjusts the temperature of your living space for the times you’re at home or away.

Do I want a programmable thermostat?

Yeah, you  probably do want a  programmable thermostat – for four main reasons:

1. Programmable thermostats will save you money: The Department of Energy estimates you could save 10% per year on your utility bills by setting a difference of 7-10 degrees for 8 hours a day. Programmable thermostats do that for you with their pre-set schedule options. You’d essentially be saving money while you and your family are at work, school, or all-day social events. Programmable thermostats also boost the efficiency of your entire HVAC system, preventing wear-and-tear costs down the road.

2. Programmable thermostats save energy: More efficiency means less energy wasted. This also means more money in your pocket. Some programmable thermostats can also be controlled remotely with your smartphone. So, if you’re coming home later than expected, simply adjust the thermostat on-the-go so you’re not wasting energy (and money).

3. Programmable thermostats will save you time: You won’t have to worry about adjusting the thermostat before you leave the house (which most of us forget anyway). No more back-and-forth in the early morning or evening. Programmable thermostats have you covered with their pre-set schedules!

4. Programmable thermostats will keep you more comfortable: Programmable thermostats can make adjustments to your home’s temperature before you need it. You can wake up, go to sleep, or return home to a comfortable temperature with no lag time. Programmable thermostats also have a smaller temperature differential than your manual unit. This means your HVAC will kick on sooner to maintain your perfect temperature.

How Do I Choose A Programmable Thermostat?

There are a lot of choices out there. Every programmable thermostat has at least four pre-programmed settings – wake, sleep, leave, and return times – to customize for your personal schedule. After that, there are three basic decisions you have to make:

  • How flexible is my schedule? 7-day models keep the same heating and cooling schedule every day. 5+2 models have one schedule for weekdays and a second schedule for weekends. 5-1-1 models have one schedule for weekdays, a second schedule for Saturdays, and a third schedule for Sundays.
  • How fancy am I trying to get? Different models have various bells and whistles. Depending on the thermostat you choose, you can get touch screens, voice and phone programming, WiFi-compatibility, maintenance reminders, even weather-on-demand. Just be sure the product you choose fits your programming and tech-related needs.
  • Does technology frustrate me? If yes, stick with the basic programmable thermostats. But if you’re a tech-minded person, a smart thermostat might be right for you! Smart thermostats have much more variety in settings and capabilities, but they can be more difficult to program, and they’re certainly more expensive. Some smart thermostats can even learn your schedule based on movement and light detection. (But if you’re not-so-keen on a piece of technology learning your household schedule, that’s OK, too).

What’s the Catch?

This more of a disclaimer, than a catch—but, like most things, to maximize the benefits of your programmable thermostat you have to use it correctly. ENERGY STAR gives a good list of things to keep in mind, including:

  • Understanding any hold, vacation, or override settings
  • Using the pre-set schedules effectively
  • Switching over all of your thermostats
  • Changing the batteries annually (if necessary)

To get the most benefit from a programmable thermostat, you should also consistently be out of the house for 8 hours or more, most days of the week. This is to maximize the savings from the efficiency and limited energy use while you’re away. For example, if you work from home, programmable thermostats might not be for you.

In addition, the right equipment is a necessity. Your HVAC has to be compatible with your programmable thermostat, and location matters, too. Installing your new thermostat in a convenient location that prevents “ghost readings” maximizes your satisfaction and savings.

The last disclaimer? Your programmable thermostat should be professionally installed. As Calgary’s trusted HVAC specialists, we’ve got you covered. Give us a call today!

A job well done.

Drake Ahern did an awesome job cleaning the ducts. Was very friendly and professional. Worked hard and paid attention to all the details. I’d definitely have him back next time.

David Dickinson

Barry did a great job in replacing a leaking Hot Water tank. Just a bit shocked at how much the cost of a new tank has increased over the years. We would certainly use ClearView for future jobs.

Ken Stowell

Thank you! Your service has always been reliable, professional, and friendly.
Rural folks can depend on you, as We have for more than 30 years, for both our property and others.
If you say you’re coming – you show up- or you promptly let us know of any delays! AND do a fantastic job. We’d asked for certain day & hours, as our neighbour has a B&B, didn’t want to cause issues with septic removal smells for them. YOU DELIVERED! Thank you. The Jackson’s.

Robert Jackson

Jon was on time and dispatch team did their best to get him to the property to do an inspection on leaking pipes and backup sewer system. Jon then immediately got another job into the system to have a deeper inspection of the entire system to determine where the blockage was.

David Crawford

Clearview was excellent to deal with. Very professional in their approach and the picture sent of the plumber before hand is an excellent idea. Richard was great to deal with. He gave me different options to resolve the problem.

Rick Pultz

Had them update and install our infloor heating two zones, and add tank less hot water on demand and install a water softener. Our technician was very professional kept his work area tidy, cleaned up after himself. He also wiped down all the equipment used including piping and tubing. He was friendly, kept us informed on his progress. You could tell he enjoys what he does… great job Thank you so much.

Carol Hill

Can’t say enough about the great service I received from Heinz regarding some concerning alerts we got on our Ecobee Smart Thermostat yesterday. I felt cared for and trusted that he was focused on the necessary followup to assure our safety. Heinz is very good at his job.

Kim Koch

Heinz was professional and honest. He gave me options and the price. The price was the price and there were no extra charges. He worked on a boiler system that was having issues. He flushed and cleaned system and everything is back up and running. When he was finished he asked if I had any question. I look forward to him coming back to service this system again.

Curtis W.

Arrived on time and did a quick and efficient replacement of my kitchen sink faucet. Also took the time to further explain the operation of the water softener installed on the last visit.
Richard was friendly and knowledgeable. Great service!

Marybeth Marrow

John came out to review our heating and AC set-up. He was very knowledgeable and patient as he walked us through the various units and proposed maintenance program. Would highly recommend.

Lucus Tomei

We could not do the water valve replacement because the city could not shut the water off. I was warned ahead of time that this might happen so was not worried. Yamil was courteous and professional and I look forward to his return when the city can fulfill there end of the job. Justin and Sean were great with the furnace install. It went smoothly and Justin explained the new thermostat fully. The walk through on the furnace was useful and timely. Justin and Sean were friendly and professional and great to work with. John who came out for the initial inspection…

Paul Palardy

I had furnace venting replaced. This company is efficient and very professional. You know who is coming to do the work and given notice of when they’ll arrive. Heinz was very knowledgeable, professional, was not bothered by all my questions. He gave full explanations, reasons why, and great advice on maintenance care. He showed that he cared about what he was doing and was very efficient in getting the work done quickly. I highly recommend this company and Heinz.

Elsa Krienke

Our hot water tank blew and fortunately we noticed right away. We called Clearview Services late in the evening and we were answered right away. We were kept in the loop throughout the entire experience and Gabe Colpitts was the service technician who visited the next morning. He was very professional and spent the time to explain and educate the different options that were available. We were up and running with hot water the very next day.

Mike Mario

The appointment to come to check my boiler was prompt and early I’m the day so I didn’t have to wait the whole day. I received a call 15mins before the arrival. An email and a text was sent earlier. Gerry introduced himself and told me his purpose. He checked my boiler for a while then explained clear to me what the problem was, it was relief to know that it is nit necessarily a serious one. He made further checks and made some recommendations for change of some worn out parts, the re-glycol – 10yrs overdue and some leak that…
